Straße der Romanik (Route of the Romanesque), Germany

As the heartland of German and European history, Saxony-Anhalt offers a host of monuments from the Middle Ages that are worth visiting. Along the „Straße der Romanik“ (Route of the Romanesque), monasteries and cathedrals, treasuries, village churches, and castles present themselves as witnesses of a groundbreaking era in history. There is no other place in Germany that has conserved as much evidence of more than 1000 years of legacy.
Between 950 and 1250 the region developed under the reign of the Ottonians and became a political and cultural center in Europe. The remains of this prosperity have been preserved in magnificence and diversity that allows us today to reflect on the outstanding skills and abilities of master builders as well as life and societies in the Middle Ages.

The „Straße der Romanik“ is 1,000 kilometers long and runs through Saxony-Anhalt in a northern and a southern loop connecting 88 buildings from the Romanesque period. Splendid cathedrals, small parish churches, mighty castles, and monasteries testify to the importance of the region, which is now Saxony-Anhalt, in the Middle Ages.
Attracting about 1.6 million visitors a year, the „Straße der Romanik“ is one of the most important pillars of Saxony-Anhalt‘s tourism offer. Alongside other highlight themes such as UNESCO, Bauhaus, Reformation, Garden Dreams, Sky Paths, and the river Elbe it makes the region an outstanding destination for culture and nature travels.
